Legendary Shihan Noriyasu Hamai passed away

On December 14, 2023, our Kyokushin family mourns the loss of a revered figure, Shihan Noriyasu Hamai.

Shihan Hamai, born on February 15, 1954, in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, was a prominent figure in Kyokushin Karate. Achieving 6th place in the 5th All-Japan Championship in 1973, he later led the Kyokushin Kaikan Ishikawa branch and achieved 4th place in the 9th All-Japan Championship in 1977.

Renowned for his analytical skills using rare video footage, Shihan Hamai trained notable athletes, including Toshio Mizuguchi and Shihan Akira Masuda. He played a pivotal role in Kyokushin Karate’s development and earned the title of a master in the field.

In 2006, he founded Kyokushin Kaikan Hamai-ha after leaving Kyokushin Kaikan.

In 2020, Shihan Hamai introduced “Draglove,” a non-painful glove. He emphasized self-defense, introducing unique rules allowing facial attacks. The All Japan Tournament under these rules began in May 2022, marking another chapter in his impactful legacy.

A luminary in the world of Kyokushin, Shihan Hamai’s legacy is marked by his significant contributions to the art and his role as a mentor to Shihan Akira Masuda.

We pay tribute to Shihan Hamai, recognizing the profound impact he has had on the development of Kyokushin and the lives of those he influenced. As we reflect on his teachings and the indelible mark he leaves behind, we honor his memory and express our gratitude for the wisdom he imparted.

During this somber time, our hearts go out to Shihan Hamai’s family, friends, and students. May they find solace in the memories of his teachings and the positive influence he had on the Kyokushin community. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as we bid farewell to a true martial arts master.

May Shihan Hamai rest in peace.
