A Legend of World Martial Arts Visits Cluj-Napoca. Mayor Emil Boc: “We Will Continue to Support All Dimensions of Sport”

The presence of Shihan Francisco Filho in Cluj-Napoca marked an important moment for the local and national martial arts community. Considered one of the greatest figures in full-contact karate and K-1 kickboxing, Shihan Francisco Filho is admired worldwide for his exceptional career, discipline, and contribution to teaching martial arts at the highest level.

His visit took place during the 2025 International BGN Kumite Weekend, held between October 24–26 at Grand Hotel Italia, an international training event bringing together more than 80 athletes from Romania, Switzerland, Brazil, Hungary, and Mexico. The gathering focused on high-level technical exchange, friendly sparring sessions, and the promotion of martial arts values that transcend national borders.

A Meeting of Champions and Leaders

Mayor Emil Boc welcomed Shihan Francisco Filho in Cluj-Napocaalong with Shihan Eduard Gabathuler (8th Dan), President of IFK Switzerland and coach of the Swiss Special Forces. During the meeting, discussions highlighted the long-term social impact of martial arts, especially in shaping character and resilience among young people.

“I was honored to meet Shihan Francisco Filho, a true legend of world martial arts. I expressed my appreciation for the way he and his colleagues promote discipline, respect, perseverance, and fair play in their work with young athletes,” stated Mayor Emil Boc.

He further emphasized the city’s commitment to sport as a pillar of community health and development:

“We will continue to support all dimensions of sport — the most affordable and efficient investment in our health.”

The visit of Shihan Francisco Filho to Cluj-Napoca reinforces the city’s growing status as a center for international martial arts culture. Through events such as the International BGN Kumite Weekend, Cluj strengthens its role in nurturing talented athletes and fostering global sports cooperation.
